Why Are Fences Getting More Popular?

Fences have come and gone from the picture of the American dream home throughout the last few decades, following fluctuating social norms and priorities.

Nowadays, while a white picket fence out front isn’t a common sight in most regions, we encounter more backyard privacy fences than we have in the past. While the pandemic likely plays a role in this rise in popularity, it’s not the only force at play.

We’re Hosting Outdoor Gatherings

Ever since “Coronavirus” became a common household term, many social gatherings have shifted outdoors in order to slow the spread of the virus. Creating a beautiful, manicured space that’s as comfortable as hosting indoors became a priority for many homeowners. Since privacy and more control over views come with fences, they go hand in hand with this trend.

We Need an At-Home Oasis

Even those of us who aren’t hosting have turned to our yards as spaces to ease our cabin fever. Outdoor hobbies like gardening or even periods of outdoor work from home time have become common staples in our daily routines. Landscaping projects have proven to be a great way to pass the time. Fences allow us to keep all of these hobbies and projects secluded and controlled, and help us stay isolated while spending time outside our homes.

We’re Obsessed With Our Pets

A recent survey found that the major driving factor in a third of millennials' decisions to buy a home is to have more space and a yard for their dog. That makes it even more of a driving factor than marriage or expecting a child (25 and 19 percent, respectively)! And with even more people becoming pet parents due to COVID, many homebuyers are considering the comfort and safety of pets as they peruse the market.

Fences help keep those precious pets safe and at home, so it’s no wonder that they’re popping up in greater numbers than we’re used to.

Our Gardens Need Protection

With sustainability more top-of-mind than ever before, a growing number of homeowners are growing at least a portion of their own produce. Areas with nearby wildlife like deer, rabbits and other scavengers call for some fruit and veggie protection. Even without the issue of nearby wildlife, growing near a fence can help protect a harvest from weather elements like strong winds.
