Don’t Buy Into a Frenzy. Build Custom Instead.

How to land your ideal home, but skip the bidding wars.

As bidding wars and offers on houses grow increasingly unreasonable, experts and news outlets nationwide have begun to chime in on the current phenomenon of the housing market. While there are many fascinating factors at play, one of the most interesting is the psychology that follows the current rush of demand for homes.

There are only so many times a person can lose out on something they really want before they start taking drastic measures, or giving up entirely. And right now, people are losing out on ten to twenty home offers...so they’re getting pretty drastic.

Caution from Experts

Some economists featured in a recent NPR piece see the risks that hopeful buyers are now willing to take, and warn against “buying into a frenzy.” With record low supply and too few homes built since the 2008 crash, there’s no getting around the incongruity of supply versus demand right now.

But that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to waive all inspections and throw budgets to the wind. For many, it just means accepting larger compromises than originally planned: living another 15 minutes outside the city, opting for a condo instead of single-family housing, or making do with a smaller lot.

A Third Option

So, you can compromise big-time on the home you end up with. You can wait a few years until the market evens out and competition is less crazy (hopefully).

Or, you can build custom

In the past, many hopeful homeowners have shied away from building new construction because of the perceived extremes: either build custom and spend every waking hour in the back-and-forth and planning, or buy a tract or spec home that looks a lot like the others in the development. Many people decided home building wasn’t for them because they wanted something less cookie-cutter than what they saw in new developments, but less time-consuming than a fully custom home building experience. So they stuck with existing real estate.

But custom building has come a long way. Now, by involving the team of experts at Atmos, the custom building process is smoother than ever. It requires less back-and-forth than buying an existing home nowadays, and a lot less compromise. With a dedicated project manager handling the nitty gritty and the freedom to match your home to your priorities, you get the best of both worlds - without taking on the risks of an over competitive bidding war.
