Connect all of your devices in the home to create a personalized experience that maximizes your safety, security, efficiency, and convenience.

It’s 2020, and the different types and amount of technology we have at our fingertips is thrilling. And if this is the year you decide to build that custom home you’ve always dreamed of, why not consider making it a smart home? Connect all of your devices in the home to create a personalized experience that maximizes your safety, security, efficiency, and convenience.

Although recent studies have shown 53% of people currently own a smart home device, that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s one singular solution to perfectly automating your entire home. Still, modern smart homes are easy enough to plan ahead with your home design so you and your builder can work together to make these dreams a reality.

Many smart home devices come with apps to control their basic functions via a smartphone, and some will also offer voice command options. But with so many different products offering different ecosystems they integrate with you’ll want to plan ahead with what brands you’re hoping to use to ensure they play nice together.

First, start with one feature you know you definitely want to have in your new smart home.

Is it voice control to turn on and off lights in different rooms? Is it a door lock that’s controlled with your smartphone? Pick a category and do research on what’s offered before narrowing down what features are most appealing to you. Then, select your first piece of smart technology and begin building the rest of your home’s ecosystem around what integrates well with each other!

Here are some common smart tech pieces you can consider for your new build:

Lighting – Smart bulbs let you control individual lights or a group of lights from your phone, as well as letting you select the brightness levels and color temperatures. You can even schedule them to turn on and off at certain points of the day.

Smart locks – This is a great option for those who want to grant others access to their home without needing a key. Whether the lock can be controlled remotely from a phone app or the lock has a code or finger sensor to engage, there are plenty of options to consider.

Thermostats – Adjust your heating and cooling based on when you’re home with a smart thermostat – some even offer multiple sensors so you can monitor different areas of your house all at once!

Security Systems – Cameras are only one thing to consider for home security. Think about motion sensors and smart doorbells for an extra measure of security, all feeding directly to your smartphone so you’re always aware of what’s going on at home!

There are so many other smart technologies to consider for your home – utilizing AI voice command centers like Alexa or Google Home, universal remotes, surround sound speaker systems throughout your home, and so much more. Building your custom home is the perfect time to integrate some (if not all!) of these options into your new space. Work with your home designer to ensure it will work together seamlessly. Once your home is done, you can sit back, relax, and let your home do the work for you!
