Complete These Home Maintenance Tasks Before Winter Hits

snowflake

As winter approaches, look over your home maintenance checklist to keep everything running smoothly!

The steps for taking care of the interior and exterior of your home can vary based on your location and climate, but most homes require some TLC as seasons change. Consider looking into these action items to prevent any unexpected costs and damages down the line.

  1. Have your heating system inspected

Regardless of whether you’ve got HVAC, floorboard, or radiator heating, take the time to have your system inspected before the outdoor temperatures drop. Changing the filter in your HVAC system is essential to keeping your home warm and healthy. Swapping filters will keep mold from developing and will prevent the heating system from becoming clogged. Before any storms roll in, make sure your cozy home base is ready to keep you warm!

2. Be vigilant about pipes

While freezing temperatures aren't as common in North Carolina as they are in other parts of the country, staying vigilant to ensure that no pipes burst in the event of a freezing day is key. Burst pipes can cause water damage and flooding inside of the home if they go undetected, and repairing them can require cutting into drywall and replacing hundreds of dollars worth of hardware. Save yourself the headache of dealing with a burst pipe by disconnecting and draining hoses, and ensure your exterior water lines and faucets have been freeze protected.

3. Check your trees

Trim back bushes, shrubs and trees on your property to prepare for the changing weather. Cut back branches to keep them away from your chimney, and cut off dead parts of trees to avoid unexpected breakage in case snow does pile up and make branches heavier.

4. Store equipment

Drain the fuel from your lawn mower and any other power equipment you’ve been using to maintain your yard. Clean and spruce up all of your gardening and lawn equipment, and store it somewhere safe and dry. This is a great time to complete any repairs needed and toss any equipment that’s broken beyond repair.

5. Inspect doors, windows, roof, and walls

Give your home a once-over to make sure you’ll be protected from the elements if a storm rolls through. Is the weatherstripping around your doors still secure and functional? Is the roof missing any shingles? Are there any cracks in the ceilings or walls? Are any of the windows beginning to crack or chip? Staying on top of these issues can make the difference between a stress-free repair and a very chilly day of scrambling for a quick fix.

Whether you live in a brand new, custom built home or a fifty-year-old house, seasonal changes will always call for a bit of care and attention for your home. If you’re ready to stop racing to keep up with repairs on a house that doesn’t meet your needs, consider building custom. While home maintenance will always demand some attention, living in a new build comes with its own peace of mind.
