Why Do Young People Look to Live Near Open Space?

What’s the draw to owning a home near a park or open space?

Put two identical homes on the market, one near a park and one without open space for a few blocks, and the one near the park will be sporting a “sold” sign much more quickly. Even residents equipped with yards often opt to live within a quick walk’s distance to a public park.

Easy Exercise

It’s much easier to get motivated for a quick run or walk if you’ve got a nearby pleasant trail to enjoy! Plus, larger parks often host outdoor group fitness classes ranging from yoga to Zumba. Anyone without a home gym can take advantage of wide open spaces and makeshift equipment (jungle gym pull-ups, anyone?) if there’s a park nearby.

Best for Pets

For lots of dog breeds, exercise recommendations can feel unobtainable without sending them on a few laps in a game of fetch. Small backyards simply don’t offer the runway some pups need in order to get their energy out and feel fulfilled! Plus, it’s easier to socialize younger dogs and rescues in the laid-back, neutral area of a park. Especially among younger generations, the importance of taking excellent care of our pets simply can’t be overstated!

Free Space for Socializing

Especially since the onset of COVID-19 and its related restrictions, fewer and fewer people are opting to hang out in restaurants and indoor spaces. Backyard barbecues, small group hikes, and park hangs have taken over as go-to activities instead, especially among groups hit hard by unemployment and the economic downturn caused by the virus. Less hassle, less exposure, and nonexistent costs make spending time together in parks the ideal way to pass a weekend when the weather’s nice.

Balancing Time in Nature With City Lifestyles

It’s clear from the choices young people are overwhelmingly making as far as relocation that two top priorities lie in outdoor recreation and access to big-city amenities and activities. Cities like Denver, Raleigh, and Bend top the growth charts because they offer mixes of both. Even for those who aren’t big-time outdoor adventurers, time surrounded by greenery is a must every once in a while. Sweeping trees, flower beds, and expanses of grass add beauty to a city and provide a small oasis within the “concrete jungle.”
