How to Maximize Curb Appeal of the Home You're Building

Building a home, but not sure how long you’ll stay? Optimize the resale value by boosting curb appeal with these key building and landscaping choices.

To ensure your new build will hold its value beyond your time living there, begin with the end in mind. “Curb appeal” refers to the way a home appears from the street or the outside. Considering curb appeal and making strategic choices around the publicly visible aspects of your home can lead to huge earnings down the line.

Colorful doors

Choose a brighter color for your front door to add a modern pop and a welcoming atmosphere to the facade of your home! Coordinate to complement the rest of the exterior paint; reds, blues, and deep greens typically strike a nice balance of colorful and bold without looking cheap or tacky. Colorful doors are also memorable and help a home stand out in a long line of house tours.

Stone walkways

Another key to creating a welcoming and polished look is a well-kept walkway. Stone or brick hold up well and cast an elevated appearance on the lawn, plus they’re practical when you have visitors!

Modern Porch Light Fixtures

It’s easy to cut corners on exterior light fixtures, but your porch light will be among the first features a visitor will see, especially if they’re coming around the dusk hours. Choose fixtures that are sturdy enough to sustain the elements you expect in your area, but that still appears refined and modern.

Large Front Porches

Especially if you’ve locked down a lot with a nice view or in a cute neighborhood, an oversized front porch carries plenty of “wow” factor. Immediately as they drive up, people can imagine themselves living in the home because you’re putting a living space on display. Include plenty of comfy seating to enjoy and show off!

Trees and Bushes

If your lot is anywhere near a loud street or busy trail, create a feeling of seclusion by incorporating trees and bushes in your landscaping. These cut down the volume from outside your home and create a peaceful, quiet oasis as well as stunning scenery right in your yard!

In your landscaping and in your exterior home design, shoot for symmetry. When features are symmetrical, they automatically appear more pleasing to the eye.

Fencing

A nice, sturdy fence is easily visible on a drive-by of any home and can help put potential buyers at ease about potential privacy of the home, as well as ease their minds about any pets they plan to bring along. Choose a fence that compliments the exterior design and the neighborhood; not every lot needs a white picket fence, and some are best with only backyard fencing!

Flowers and Garden Boxes

As you plot out your landscaping plans, be sure to leave space for flowers and garden boxes. Flowers are stunning along pathways, up close to the street or mailbox, or against the house itself. Window boxes come in handy to add more splashes of color to a home and create even more personality and welcoming energy that’s clearly visible from the street.
